Hannah Höch Click on these to make them bigger!
Hannah Höch is from a group of artists called DADAISTS. These artists used to take bits and pieces, odds and ends, and turn them into art by arranging them in a certain way. She made some very special pictures using two methods. Maybe you have used these methods in school yourself!

Dadaists Dada artists took all sorts of odds and ends to create beautiful pictures. They formed after the First World War in 1918 in Cologne, Germany. The only reason they called themselves DADAISTS is because they couldn't think of a name to call themselves, so they had a look in a dictionary and called themselves the first word they saw, which was DADA. It is a French word that means 'hobbyhorse'...hmmm! One artist, Duchamp, took a bicycle wheel and put it on a stand. He then called it art! Kurt Schwitters used torn bills, travel brochures, bus tickets, broken chair legs, pieces of material and bits of wood to create his pictures. The thing is, that their pictures were made with such skill that it didn't matter what they used! Click here for more information on Kurt Schwitters

Fun ideas!
You need: PVA glue, plain paper, packaging from your lunch Get together with your friends and talk about what you could make if you put all the packaging from your lunch together. Don't use scissors, just tear the paper because it looks better that way! Then arrange the different scraps of paper on the background piece of paper so that it tells some kind of story... when you're making a collage remember that it usually works better when you glue the scraps of paper rather than the background paper. Have fun! |

You need: PVA glue, plain paper, old tickets, brochures and photos of somewhere you have been on holiday. Gather all your materials together. You can make a sort of collage/photomontage of a place you have been on holiday to. Arrange your materials in an attractive way and then glue them to the background paper so that they tell your story of where you were on holidays! |
You need: PVA glue, magazine pictures, plain paper Decide what you are going to make a collage about - it could be about anything... dreams, school, hairstyles, chairs etc... literally anything! Find some old magazines that nobody wants any more and ask for permission to cut them up. Arrange the pictures on the page so that it means something to you. Have lots of fun making up your own art - and remember that art can be made up of anything |
You need: picture from magazine, paper, glue, colouring pencils, scissors For this one, you'll need to read the part about Andy Warhol on this page. Find a picture like Campbell's Soup Tin in a magazine. Cut it in half down the middle. Then stick the half onto a plain page. Fill in the other half as exactly as you can with your colouring pencils. This is very good for your concentration, and it feels really great when you get it right! |
Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol was an American artist who was most famous in the 1960's and 1970's. Click here for more information on him.
This artist was inspired by the DADA artists because of their idea that you could make art from anything. This is exactly what Andy Warhol became famous for. He created pictures from soup cans, boxes, faces, anything interesting he could find! Some of his pictures were made from oil paintings, some were photographs. He used lots of different media for his creations.
The following are some examples of his work.
