The People of Holland
Population Despite its small size, Holland is the most densely populated country in the world. The people of the Netherlands are often called the Dutch. But they usually refer to themselves as Netherlanders or Hollanders. The Netherlands has one of the highest proportions of urban residents of any country. About 9 out of every 10 people live in cities. |

Standard of Living The Netherlands is one of the most prosperous countries in Europe and its hard-working people enjoy a high standard of living. The average life expectancy at birth is 77 years. The Dutch are a home-loving and hospitable people. Most people have attractive, comfortable and tidy homes, often with large windows that let in as much sunlight as possible. The Dutch spend a lot of time at home and consider family life to be important.

Food Dutch food has a reputation for being wholesome and filling. The Dutch are very fond of fish, especially eels and herrings. Raw herrings and smoked eels are often sold from street stalls. Hutspot is a traditional Dutch dish. It is made from a mixture of mashed carrots, potatoes and onions. It makes a filling meal when served with stewed beef (klapstuk). |

Pea soup is a traditional winter dish. It is made from peas, bacon, potatoes, sausages, leeks and celery. These ingredients are boiled together in water to form a thick soup which is eaten with brown bread. |
