Legend tells us that Scathach's stronghold is
situated off the coast of Alba (the old Gaelic name for Scotland). It is very likely
that this is now the island that we call the Isle of Skye. Scathach is pronounced
'Sca-hah', or 'Sce-hah' , so it is said that the Island owes it's name to this
famous warrior woman! It was not unusual for women to train warriors in ancient Celtic times. Many fearsome female warriors existed up until the late sixth century. Indeed, many of the most terrible and warlike of the Celtic gods were always female! If you would like to learn more about female warriors, click here! |
| To reach the isle of Scathach, Cúchulainn had to undertake a difficult,
magical journey. This journey was to help the hero to gain wisdom, skill and most of
all to be transformed to a fearsome warrior. Conall the Victorious and Laegaire
Battle Winner started the journey to the isle of Scathach with Cúchulainn. However, they
lost heart because the journey was so difficult and retnruned to Ulster. First of
all Cúchulainn crossed the Plain of Ill Luck. Here the feet of the traveller could
be pierced by razor sharp grass blades. Next he entered the Perilous Glen, filled
with devouring Beasts. Last of all he came to the Bridge Cliff. This bridge
tilted upwards when anyone tried to cross, throwing them to their death. Three time
Cúchulainn tried to cross but failed. On the fourth time, 'the change' came over
him and he took a magical leap called the 'Salmon leap' and he reached the other
side.
