Kangaroo

Kangaroos belong to a group of animals called marsupials. 

They are hopping animals.  Their front legs are very short but their hind legs are very strong. 

They use their tale to balance themselves as they hop along.

There are four species of kangaroo.  The largest is the red kangaroo which can be up to six feet tall.

A baby kangaroo is called a joey.

Koala:

Koala bears are also marsupials. 

An adult koala bear is about two foot tall and has no tail.

They have strong claws for climbing and gripping barks.

They love to eat the leaves of eucalyptus trees.

They sleep during the day and look for food at night.

Cockatoo:

The cockatoo is a large parrot.

It is uasually white but they can sometimes be pink or black.

They have strong bent beaks, which they use for opening nuts and seeds,

You can even train a cockatoo to say a few words!

Emu:

The emu is a large flightless bird.

It has a large neck, a small head and very long legs.

It eats grass, insects, fruits and nuts.

Kookabura

The kookabura is the words largest kingfisher. 

It has a large square head and a large strong beak.

It eats small animals, snakes, large insects and lizards.

The kookabura has a strange voice, it sounds like a persons laugh.

Wombat

The wombat is very similar to badgers which we find here in Ireland.

They are large animals which have no tail and have rodent like teeth.

They live in burrows in the ground.  They are nocturnal animals like the wallaby, which means that they sleep during the day and hunt for food at night.  They eat grass and the inner barks of trees.

Wallaby

The wallaby belongs to the kangaroo family, but it is smaller than most kangaroos.

They have large hind feet, strong hind limbs and a long tail.

The wallaby is a nocturnal animal, which means that it sleeps by day and goes and collects food during the night.

Platypus

The platyus is a small mammal which lives in eastern Australia.

It has flat, webbed feet and a broad, flat tail and is covered with thick brown fur.

It lives on muddy banks of streams.

It comes out at night to hunt for worms and insects.
