New York
The Big Apple !

New York is one of the most 'cosmopolitan' cities in the world. Many of New York's population were born in other countries and up to one third speak languages other than English at home!! It has a population of over seven million people. More people live in the city of New York than on the whole island of Ireland!
New York was
originally called New Amsterdam by the Dutch. Built on the Hudson River, it is one
of the busiest ports in the world. It consists of five districts. They are
Overlooking the city is the Statue of Liberty, the world famous symbol of freedom for emigrants, such as the Irish people who fled from the famine. It sits on liberty Island at the entrance to New York Harbour. It was a present from the french and was given to America in the late 19th century |

The city centre, Manhatton, is a narrow island, about twenty kilometres long and four kilometres wide. It is surrounded by the Hudson river and is linked to the other boroughs by bridges and tunnels. Some of the world's tallest buildings such as the Chrysler Building and the beautiful Empire State Building, are to be found there.
In Manhattan there are many famous museums, the Stock Exchange, the United Nations Headquarters and particular cultural areas like Chinatown and Little Italy. Broadway is the legendary theatre district and the world's best play's and musicals play there every night to huge audiences. Many Irish plays have been performed there!!
