Industry employs about  30% of the Australian workforce. Due to the amount of natural resources, the country is a major exporter of agricultural products, minerals and fossil fuels including coal, oil and natural gas.

Australia has a significant motor industry employing more than 70,000 people. Five companies assemble cars, and all are subsidiaries of either Japanese or American companies.

 

Special Cities

Some cities are especially important for certain products. For example, Sydney is noted for the production of transport equipment; Hobart for textiles, clothing and footwear; Shepparton for food and tobacco.
