The Sahara is the world's largest desert. It stretches across the top of northern Africa and covers an area of about 3,500,000 square miles, divided among 11 African countries.
The Sahara is one of the hottest places in the world. On the average, less than five inches of rain falls a year. Only about 15% of the Sahara is covered with sand dunes. The rest consists mainly of rocky plateaus, gravel-covered plains, and mountains. There is little vegetation in the Sahara. Few people live in the Sahara. Nomadic tribes graze sheep, goats, and cattle on the fringes of the Sahara.
