Located on the west bank of the River Nile on the outskirts of Cairo, the pyramids at Giza in Egypt are the only example of the original Seven Wonders of the World still standing. The Egyptians constructed the pyramids between 2700 BC and 1000 BC to serve as tombs for their rulers or pharoahs.
A pyramid is a structure with four triangular sides that rise to a point. A pyramid may have a base that is square or a rectangle. About 80 pyramids still stand in Egypt. The largest pyramid ever built is called the Pyramid of Khufu at Giza.
