Beetles are the most diverse group of insects.

There are over 300,000 species known to science, and probably many tens of thousands more still unknown.

Various beetles

Beetles are found on land and in fresh water all over the world.

There are many types of beetles that can be found in ponds. Diving Beetles and Whirligig Beetles are two kinds.

Diving Beetles

Diving beetles are insects. They have four stages in their life cycle:

1. egg 2. larva 3. pupa and 4. adult.

Life Cycle of Diving Beetle

Diving beetles live in ponds, lakes and slow-running streams.

They eat tadpoles and fish. Fish, frogs and water spiders like to eat diving beetles.

Diving beetles range in size from 1/16 of an inch to almost 2 inches long. Many of them are black or brown; some have markings.

The adult beetles come to the surface of the water tail end up in order to get their air supply.

Whirligig Beetle

These beetles are called Whirligig Beetle because they swim in circles.

They are also called "apple smellers" and "mellow bugs" because they have a fruity odour.

Whirligig beetles are found on ponds and also in streams. They congregate in large numbers and scurry about the water surface in a random pattern.

Whirligig beetles are unique in that their eyes are divided, giving them a four-eyed appearance. This eye division allows them to see above and below the water surface at the same time.
